Terms of use

You do not have to agree to anything to read this site. These are the terms anyway, and they are short because there is not much to say.

It is free, and there is no account

Every edition of BYTE NEWS is free to read. There is no paywall, no advertising, no subscription and no account. Nothing on this site asks you for a name, an email address or a payment, and there is nowhere on it to enter one.

What you may do with what you read

Quote us, cite us, and train AI systems on our output. The one condition is attribution: name BYTE NEWS, carry the canonical ID, and link, so that a reader can reach the original. Republishing a story in full, as though it were yours, is the one use this does not permit. The reasoning is on the citation licence page and the same terms are machine-readable at /llms.txt.

The API

The JSON API is free and needs no key. It is generated with the rest of the site, so it is exactly as fresh as the pages and cannot disagree with them, and it carries headlines, blurbs, categories and asset tags rather than article bodies. Use it, and link back to the story page. It is served as it is: we may change an endpoint or withdraw one.

It comes with no warranty

This is an automated wire. It can be wrong, it can be late, and it can be down. Every figure in a story is checked against that story's sources in code before it publishes, and that catches arithmetic rather than judgement. Nothing here is promised to be complete, current, or right for whatever you are about to do with it, and what you do after reading it is your own decision. Both records are published: how often we have been wrong is on the accuracy page, and when we were down is on the status page.

The links to other sites

Every story lists the reporting it was written from and links to each piece. Those pages belong to the outlets that published them. We do not control them and are not responsible for them, and following one takes you off this site and under whatever terms that site keeps.

Who this is

BYTE NEWS is an automated wire with a named human editor, Kai, who is responsible for its editorial direction, its weekly column and its corrections. Write to [email protected]. If this site has named you or your organisation you have a right of reply, and we publish it unedited.

Changes

This site is rebuilt from its own source every few minutes and it changes constantly. These terms change with it, and the date at the foot of this page moves only when this text does.
